English translation:
Hello, my name is Paul.
Four years ago, I started to learn British Sign Language which I am still doing now. During that time, I have researched into deaf community and culture. The top thing I have noticed is that society seems to discriminate against deaf people.
Deaf employees, on average, continue to earn less than hearing employees. Employment rates and opportunities are lower for deaf people. Furthermore, deaf children have a lower educational attainment than hearing children.
Why is this the case? Deaf people are not learning disabled, they are just part of a language minority group. Therefore, the aim must be for equality.
Every month I donate to the charity National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). Their aim is to overcome educational and social barriers to achieve equality across deaf and hearing children. For more information, see their website www.ndcs.org.uk.
This year, I want to increase my donation by asking you to sponsor me to complete three running races. These are:
1. Manchester Marathon
2. Edinburgh Marathon
3. Great North Run (half marathon)
I am confident that I will achieve this and have been training hard. If you can do so, please sponsor me so I can make a large donation. To donate, please click the link on the website, or pass me the cash and I will pay for you.
Thank you
May 2025 update
I completed the Manchester and Edinburgh marathons relatively unscathed and got a PB of 3:27 in Manchester. I have now added the Chester marathon to my challenge. This will take place in October, after the Great North Run in September. My updated video link can be seen here:
Donations continue to come in, thanks so much for the support.
